Our Mission
To perpetuate the rich legacy of Boggs Academy by connecting alumni, supporting educational initiatives, and preserving our institutional heritage for future generations.
The History of Boggs Academy
The Foundation (1906)
Boggs Academy was founded in 1906 through the vision of Reverend John Lawrence Phelps, who approached the Walker family to establish a school built on Christian principles for the education of African American youth. Rodney Walker and Morgan Walker generously donated two acres of land in Keysville, Georgia.
Early Development
The first structures on the Boggs campus were the school building and a chapel. The academy was named in honor of Mrs. Virginia Boggs, who served as the corresponding secretary of the Board of Missions for Freedmen. The chapel, named Morgan Grove Presbyterian Church in honor of Morgan Walker, was completed in October 1909.
Growth and Challenges
In 1930, the original church was destroyed by fire, but through the generosity of the Blackburn family of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a new chapel was erected. This building, named the Blackburn Presbyterian Church, still stands on the campus today.
Educational Excellence (1906-1984)
For nearly eight decades, Boggs Academy provided college-preparatory education that fostered leadership, academic achievement, and community service. The institution shaped thousands of graduates who became leaders in their communities.
